A lose lose situation, How do we gain resources?
If you look back on the history of teaching as a profession , you would see that teaching was a profession started by women for women. So it is no surprise that the field is dominated by females, because of this I feel through out the course of history teachers and students alike have never fully experienced support and resources like other departments. In fact it seems like whenever a budget cut needs to be made the first place they look is education. So naturally we as teachers are not going to explain that are inadequate funding and support is leading to providing children with sub par early education in fear that what little support is given will be taken away. So how do you advocate for funds for the children without making our program look sub par in the process.

Aloha Johnathan,
ReplyDeleteBeing a man in ECE, I am wondering how you feel? We are a female dominated occupation, being a man, how can we better help men to be open to becoming educators? How can we open perspectives from both men and women if one gender dominates the field?
In regards to budget cuts, you are correct, they do look at education first. Why is that? If education is so much needed and so prestigious why take the resources away?
I am wondering how we can advocate for funds, but can we make do with what we have? or Do we often use our own money towards our classrooms?
Mahalo for your post.

It is very sad to know that education seems to be the first area that gets the budget cut, interesting enough that we are damned if we do and dames if we don't. They are always quick to point out what we are not doing as educators but never admit their wrong doing. I as a parents hated the furlough days that were taken while my daughter was in public school, the only people who really loose are the children.
