Are you a good manager and overseer?

This chapter talked about the importance of being a good manager of your program. The writer starts off by telling us a story of director who was great at supporting the staff and loved by them to, but because of her lack of managerial skills they felt unsupported. All the children directly affected by teacher's who feel unsupported in their approaches or times of need? If so how do we as teachers gain support in an environment such as the one in the story in the beginning of chapter 5? and as directors how are we to become a fully well rounded director in which we excel in all areas of the triangle? or Can I be a director who is one sided? Shouldn't it not matter what the director is like as long as the teachers do their job?

  1. How do you effectively support your staff? What truly makes a good manager? Should you be concerned about being a good manager, or would you be concerned with being an effective leader? How is one supposed to balance all of their responsibilities on top of evaluations and supporting their staff?

  2. Aloha Johnathan,

Trying to strengthen and find ways to improve myself in this area was hard, its great to have all these qualities as a director, but what happens if you arent comfortable or have no experience within this area? Being supportive is key, especially in an ECE environment, support is greatly needed, have you felt like you werent supported by co-workers, administrators, staff, your boss? How do we deal with these situations? Can assessment be a tool?

    Mahalo for your post.

  3. Johnathan,
in reguards to your last question, yes it defiantly matters what the director is like if even if the teachers are doing their job,a director is there to lead and direct in ways that are intended to challenge and support the needs of the teachers, children and families. Personally i feel if a director is not organized, responsive and generally respected by the staff if effects and is obvious in the way the school runs. What kind of personality and skills do you feel directors should obtain in order to be a good manager and leader?.

  4. Hi Johnathan,
This is an interesting thought - if people like their jobs, does it matter if the director employs all sides of the triangle? What I wonder about is what makes a teacher like his job? Are there specifics? Does it relate to less work? ethical work? complex and thoughtful work? relationships? something else? Can the elements that define how a person comes to a like a job differ depending on the person and the context? And in what ways should a director create a space for a teacher to like a job? How does the director's ability to like his job also contribute to the overall setting? Does the triangle, understanding and implementing each side further create a space where a director can develop as a person and part of the community?

    Cheers,
    Jeanne

  5. Hi Jonathan. I feel that if a teacher is really in a situation that she feels unsupported, they need to talk to the director personally and bring it to the directors attention. It’s hard for teachers to not feel supported, especially if they are a new teacher. Being a full and well rounded director based on the triangle can be difficult. Can that be a directors overall goal? What is the directors viewpoint of his/her staff? Does he/she have a close relationship with their staff? I would hope to think that directors are placed and given the opportunity to work in that position because they have good character and quality. I would hope that directors care about their staff and support them to the best of their ability. But what I do notice is that for some staff members in the ECE field, a job is just a job. It depends on the intentions and viewpoints on why people work. Is it about money? Or to really create a well rounded unique school with a close staff?

  6. I think that in order for a teacher to be be a good teacher they have to be able to work with people of many personalities, the same needs to be said about a director. As a director we just need to know just as the kids learn on a daily basis so do we, we also will come into being a director and develop our own styles of directing.
